HONOURS EVEN IN BASEMENT BATTLE

BEACONSFIELD SYCOB 2 LEIGHTON TOWN 2

Beaconsfield SYCOB and Leighton Town fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Holloways Park with both sides playing football that made a mockery of their lowly league positions.

The early period was just shaded by The Rams with Aaron Berry having a couple of decent attempts in the first quarter of an hour and Kofi Lockhart-Adams also making a nuisance of himself to The Reds defence. Leighton's Danny Watson had a shot in anger on 25 minutes but it was SYCOB who made the breakthrough on 34 minutes when a good run by debutant Romaine Walker set up Kofi and the returning striker calmly tucked the ball away to give The Rams a 1-0 lead at the break.

A double substitution and a rollicking from manager Craig Bicknell obviously worked as Leighton came out fired up for the second half and within 60 seconds they were level, Christian Lester putting the ball away. The Reds then enjoyed a good period of possession and pressure with Phil Draycott firing just wide on 50 minutes whilst five minutes later a good Leighton attack saw the ball hit The Rams post and luckily bounce out to safety.

SYCOB weathered the storm and Berry was desperately unlucky on 69 minutes to see a fine chip bring out a brilliant save from Dan Green in the Leighton goal. The resulting corner saw an Alex Murray header cleared off The Reds goal line whilst sixty seconds later Tom Gant had an effort just wide of the Leighton post.

The two teams continued to trade attacks and it was Leighton who scored what they thought would be the winner in the 85th minute when Danny Watson chipped the ball over Sam Bunting after some good one touch build up play. SYCOB weren't going to fold however and in the last minute Elliot Carey was brought down by Green and Kofi calmly stroked the resulting penalty away.

Overall a draw was a fair result in what was the first game back in charge of The Rams for Gary Meakin. Some returning "older" heads like Craig Carby and Kurtney Brooks will for sure help the younger FAB Academy players like Alex Murray and Ollie Jones develop and on the evidence of this performance The Rams have enough quality to get themselves out of trouble.

One final note - despite a day of constant rain the Holloways Park pitch coped fantastically. Credit to the Groundsmen for keeping it in such good condition as most other clubs would have had to call this fixture off.

Come On You Rams!
