Rams see early lead and points washed away in a second half Walton deluge

Beaconsfield Town 1  v  2  Walton Casuals

Rams Man of the Match - Reece Yorke

Beaconsfield Town welcomed back two old boys for the home fixture with Walton Casuals at Holloways Park on Saturday. The returning duo, Charlie Losasso and Anthony Mendy, went straight into the starting line-up.

The game started with a bang. Jordan Ajanlekoko, deputising for the suspended Luke Neville missing the game after clocking up five yellows, received a caution of his own after just two minutes. In fairness it was a good foul for his team. Snuffing out a promising attack with a pull back on David Fitzpatrick who appeared to be bursting through the centre at pace.

The mid-season changes for Gary Meakin paid off after as little as 10 minutes when Losasso’s cross from the left towards Mendy was cleared on the stretch and fell to Louis Stead, the other mid-season returnee of recent weeks. He set himself 25 yards out and arrowed a volley into the top corner with Alex Tokarczyk in the visitors goal grasping at fresh air as the midfielders effort rocketed by. One of the better goals you’ll see this season anywhere.

As it turned out this was the outstanding moment of a first half where both sides tried to play despite worsening conditions. Each enjoyed spells of possession with the visitors particularly strong down the right flank where Cheyce Grant and Bradley Pearce combined well all afternoon giving Mayo Balogun a thorough examination. For the most part though defences held sway and neither keeper was particularly extended as the home side in particular failed to capitalise on a number of set piece opportunities which they could not take advantage of

Half time 0-0

Having announced themselves sporadically in the first period the forecast gale force winds and torrential rain showers arrived with a vengeance in the second half. As the rain cascaded down Walton staged the sort of second half comeback that is becoming a regular occurrence at Holloways Park this season.

The Rams defence retreated further and further in an attempt to protect the lead pressed back by waves of Walton attacks. The pressure seemed to have told within 10 minutes when  Michael Atkinson saw what looked like the equaliser chalked off after ref and assistant concluded that his 53rd minute goal-bound effort passed by a team mate in an offside position in the direct eye-line of and therefore interfering with Myles Bowman. To be fair it was a sweetly struck low effort from 25 yards through a crowd following a Reece Yorke headed clearance. I strongly doubt Bowman had much chance either way but the Rams weren’t going to complain and breathed a sigh of relief.

Despite offering little in the way of attacking threat, with only a Losasso freekick high over the bar and a Balogun effort just wide to show for their diminished possession for the most part the home defence, reverting to a back four, in the absence of Neville and Sean Fraser (claimed by parent club Slough Town), coped well enough under the increased pressure.

October player of the month Reece Yorke won his battles and organised those around him effectively.

That said though, as the pressure increased and the conditions worsened the visitors turned up the pressure and you began to feel it was only a matter of time.

This feeling of dread was principally due to the introduction of sub James Ewington on the hour mark. His quickness, sharpness and direct running down the left gave The Rams something new to cope with and in the end made the difference between two pretty well matched teams.

First he burst through onto a through-ball in the left channel and angled his shot across Bowman and in off the far post.

Beaconsfield staged something of a rally with sub Jon-Jo Bates launching a couple of driving runs, relieving pressure on the hard pressed defence and Tokarczyk was forced into his only meaningful second half action tumbling and fumbling a low Losasso drive but there was no Ram close enough to prevent him falling on his own spill.

Walton continued to press and exert the greater control though. Manolis Gogonas had a late effort deflected wide in the last minute of regulation time but the pressure finally told in the 94th minute. Ewington again broke into the left channel and drew a foul from Alex Nolan the resulting freekick was deflected across goal and via the corner flag out for a corner. This delivery was met by Charlie Fox who nipped in ahead of Ajanlekoko to direct a downward header low into the corner past the despairing dive of Myles Bowman.

The manner of defeat so close to full time was hard to take but in truth it would be hard to argue that Walton weren’t worth the win based on their second half performance.

The defeat sees Beaconsfield stay rooted to the bottom of the table. With a week to lick their wounds and regroup before a key visit to fellow strugglers Hendon.
