FA Trophy: Fareham Town 4–1 Beaconsfield Town

Beaconsfield Town’s FA Trophy journey came to an end with a 4–1 defeat at Fareham Town, a result that was harsher than their performance suggested after a competitive first half at Cams Alders.
The visitors began brightly and almost took the lead inside six minutes when James Dobson cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike that had the home goalkeeper scrambling, only to see the ball whistle inches wide. That early threat was undone on 16 minutes as Fareham struck first; A precise pass found Callie Neil, who swept confidently beyond Dymott to give the hosts the lead.
Three minutes later came a major flashpoint. Davies latched onto a loose back pass, rounded the goalkeeper and appeared to be brought down, but much to Beaconsfield’s frustration, the referee dismissed the penalty appeals. The setback grew worse on 23 minutes when Dymott pushed a shot onto the post, only for Charlie Cooper to tap in the rebound and double Fareham’s advantage.

Beaconsfield responded well. Davies and Oke-William both tested the home goalkeeper, while at the other end, Neville produced a vital block to prevent a third. Their perseverance was rewarded on 44 minutes when Smith delivered a superb cross for Davies, who fired low into the bottom corner to give the visitors a lifeline at 2–1 heading into the interval.

The momentum, however, swung back to Fareham shortly after the restart. In the 52nd minute, Neil turned provider with a dangerous ball into the area, allowing Sibley to slot home and restore the two-goal cushion. Just seven minutes later, Arnold added a fourth, effectively ending the contest despite Beaconsfield’s continued efforts to push forward.

The visitors still pushed forward, but it wasn’t enough, summing up a frustrating afternoon for Beaconsfield, whose endeavour could not match the hosts’ ruthlessness.
Fareham’s clinical finishing secured their place in the next round, while Beaconsfield departed the competition reflecting on what might have been after a promising start.

Now over to Sunday, where Beaconsfield Women secured their first victory at Tier 5 level with a thrilling 2–1 win over Reading, holding firm under late pressure to mark a landmark afternoon for the club.

The first half was played at a high tempo with chances at both ends. Beaconsfield carved out the first real opening after 12 minutes when Henna Hussain slipped in Freya Harris, whose shot was pushed away by the Reading goalkeeper. Moments later, Thomson’s free kick from the edge of the area was heading for the top corner before a fingertip save kept the scores level.

Reading responded with a dangerous counter-attack midway through the half, only for Thomson to recover brilliantly with a last-ditch challenge. On 33 minutes, Beaconsfield debutant Sophie Cheadle produced a stunning save from close range to keep her side level, diving low to her right from just six yards. Her intervention ensured the sides went into the interval goalless.

The breakthrough came on the hour mark when Hussain showed quick feet inside the area before finishing superbly to give Beaconsfield a deserved lead. The afternoon then saw a moment of history on 68 minutes, as Lyons became the youngest player ever to represent the club at this level, replacing Ferreira who had taken a knock.

Reading hit back almost immediately, equalising from a corner on 69 minutes to set up a tense finale. Both sides pushed for a winner, but it was Beaconsfield who struck the decisive blow late on. With five minutes remaining, Todd’s free kick caused havoc in the Reading box and Katie Riddington reacted quickest to fire home, restoring the lead at 2–1.

The visitors poured forward in search of another equaliser, but Beaconsfield defended resolutely. Cheadle, on her debut, remained composed and the back line stood firm to see out the closing stages.

When the final whistle blew, Beaconsfield celebrated a huge moment in their history — their first win at Tier 5 level, achieved through determination, discipline and no shortage of quality. Player of the Match was rightly awarded to goalkeeper Sophie Cheadle, whose first-half heroics laid the foundation for a famous victory.

The Devs also won, beating Flackwell Health 1-0 away with a goal from Sophie Burnham in their first competitive game.
