Beaconsfield Quell Quarry to Advance in the Plate

Eric Smith

Quarry Rovers Nomads 0-1 Beaconsfield Town Women's Development

Liena Lukina's first-half strike was enough to earn the Beaconsfield Town Women's Development team a 1–0 win away at Quarry Rovers Nomads and secure their place in the next round of the Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League Plate.

Having already reached the third round of the Berks & Bucks FA Women's Trophy, the Development side turned their attention to the TVCWFL Plate, travelling to Headington, Oxford, for a tricky preliminary round tie.

Playing on an uneven, mud-soaked surface against lower-division opposition, fluent football was near impossible as both sides battled for control in a cagey opening. The Rams stood firm in defense while gradually chipping away at the Quarry backline, driven by the persistent threat of Amaani Chopra down the right-hand side.

It looked as though the sides would go into the break on level terms, but five minutes before the interval, Beaconsfield struck the decisive blow. Louise Curr, making her debut for the Development side, brought down an awkward bouncing ball and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through to Lukina, who poked home to put the Rams in front!

While the second half followed a similar pattern, Beaconsfield’s failure to double their lead left the door open for a late push from the hosts. Quarry piled on the pressure, but Niamh Kearney and debutant Gemma Lunn marshalled the defence brilliantly, winning countless aerial duels to protect the slender lead.

The victory ensures the Rams safely navigate a tough test on the road and progress to the next round of the TVCWFL Plate.
