HILLIANS END RAMS TROPHY DREAMS

BURGESS HILL TOWN 5 BEACONSFIELD TOWN FC 1

Beaconsfield's interest in this season's cup competitions came to an end with this heavy looking defeat - however, for well over half an hour The Rams were at least equal of their higher league opponents and if they had taken their more than presentable chances could well have made things more difficult for their hosts.

The Hillians went ahead on five minutes when a shot by Chris Smith took a deflection and flew past Sam Bunting. The lead was to last only three minutes though as Ryan Haugh sent over an inviting cross for Callum Bunting to head past Josh James. Haugh and Bunting again combined on 18 minutes but this time the forward put the opportunity over the bar. Three minutes later a superb pass by Ryan Hill found Bunting who held off his marker, rounded the keeper but hit the side netting rather than the back of the net.

Instead of being 3-1 up at half time The Rams found themselves 3-1 down. The busy Dean Cox hit a "worldy" volley on 37 minutes to restore Burgess Hill's lead and - after Sam Bunting had made two very good saves to deny Jonah Ayunga - the home side snatched a third on the stroke of half time as Cox pulled the ball back for Sam Fisk to power home through a crowd of players.

If The Rams had managed to pull one back in the early stages of the second period it would have made things 'interesting'. They didn't and instead Cox again turned provider to set up Ayunga who sent a well timed chip over the on rushing Sam Bunting on 56 minutes and it was pretty much game over.

Spencer Maw, on for the subdued Nathan Minhas, hit a great 30 yard shot on 71 minutes that left James standing but cannoned off The Hillians bar. Beaconsfield also had a valid claim for a penalty on 88 minutes as Ollie Jones was bundled over - even the Burgess Hill fans thought it was a pen - but the officials didn't agree. The final slap for The Rams came in time added on as a howler from Sam Bunting gifted Cox the simplest of chances to round off the scoring and the Man Of The Match didn't disappoint.

It's now back to the nitty gritty of League football for Beaconsfield - seven defeats on the spin, no matter how unlucky, it still a grim statistic. The whole club - players, management, officials and supporters - must all start pulling together and start getting some points on the table and some wins under their belt.
