HONOURS EVEN ON OPENING DAY

HANWELL TOWN 1 BEACONSFIELD TOWN FC 1

The opening game of the 2016-17 season - and the first of the new joint managerial reign of Andy Hurley and Leigh Wooldridge - saw Beaconsfield exit Reynolds Field with a hard earned (some would say lucky) point and some very tired bodies as the hot weather made watching a joy but participating an ordeal!

A decent run into the box by Spencer Maw in the fifth minute would surely have resulted in a goal if he'd pulled the ball back to the unmarked Ryan Hill. Alas the chance went begging and a minute later The Rams were almost made to pay when Hanwell's Tom Hunt crashed an effort against the Beaconsfield bar.

Five minutes after this The Geordies Michael Buckley brought out the first of a string of saves from Sam Bunting, Bradley Simmonds also testing The Rams custodian on a couple of occasions. However, Hanwell really should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time when Anton Robinson was presented with an open goal but he proceeded to end the ball well over the bar.

The second period was only six minutes old when Bradley Simmonds made space to cut inside The Rams defence and curl a beauty past Bunting's outstretched arm. This in turn inspired Hanwell to ramp up the pressure and the next quarter of an hour saw them create and miss a succession of opportunities much to manager Ray Duffy's dismay.

At one down Beaconsfield were still in it and in the 73rd minute a hopeful cross into the box fell to sub James Harding who calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Aaron Watkins to draw The Rams level.

The fact that they remained on equal terms was helped by a great save from Bunting on 79 minutes as he somehow managed to claw away a goal bound effort from Tyler Christian-Law.

For The Rams, in defence Guri Demuria and Harry Tucker were both very solid, Captain Aaron Minhas battled gamely in midfield and the lively Ryan Hill seemed to be the one most likely to unlock The Geordies defence. Outstanding though was keeper Sam Bunting so let's hope he doesn't have to be so busy over the next batch of games!
