Poole punish Rams lack of early ruthlessness.

Poole Town 3 v 1 Beaconsfield Town

Rams Man of the Match - Aaron Minhas

The final analysis a 3-1 home win for a mid-table team looking upwards against second bottom looks like a straightforward night at the office for Poole Town. Beaconsfield though will rue a flurry of early chances which went begging. Had they been finished with the ruthlessness subsequently displayed by their hosts we would have had a very different evening.

Despite kicking into a stiff breeze in the first half it was the visitors who took early command. Aaron Minhas saw a chipped free kick acrobatically tipped over by Nicholas Hutchings in the home goal. From the resulting corner Jordan Ajanlekoko found space at the far post 8 yards out but somehow contrived to place his header wide of the gaping goal.

In their next forward foray Matthew Sorinola’s persistence resulted in a corner. In a well worked training ground routine the ball was played to Louis Stead in space just outside the box and his clipped cross was met at the far post by Alex Cathline but the burly striker could not control his header which flashed just over the bar.

Cliche alert. “You need to score when you are in the ascendancy.” Cliché’s are so for a reason.

Hence the tide turned after sixteen minutes but not before The Rams passed up another great chance.

James Ewington burst into the box on an angle and sent in a low shot which Hutchings saved at the second attempt.

From the resulting clearance the ball fell to Corby Moore in the centre circle. He turned upfield and advanced towards goal as the defence backed off he sent in a low drive from 30 yards which with the assistance of the breeze and the wet surface skidded into the corner.

From their first meaningful attack the hosts were ahead and within seven minutes the lead was doubled as the early confidence ebbed away from the Rams.

Moore was at the heart of it again, this time cutting in from the right flank before sending in a fierce dipping shot which beat Myles Bowmans full length dive and crashed off the underside of the bar Harry Baker was first to the rebound but Bowman recovered enough to block the initial effort but could not hold it and Baker rammed in the loose ball.

Moore and the home midfield were rampant now and Gary Meakin switched the system to three at the back to bolster the midfield and stop the bleeding. The home side countered pushing their full backs on and switching play from wing to wing to create overloads particularly for Jack Dickson who became increasingly prominent as the half wore on.

The Rams were clinging on but the change had the desired effect and the visitors made it to half time without further damage.

Half-time 2-0

At half time Gary Meakin shuffled the pack, introducing Wes Daly for Ade Shokunbi and Cheyce Grant for Alex Cathline. Some of the earlier confidence returned as Daly, in particular, was able to solidify the midfield and lead and direct an effective press on the opposing midfield so that they did not enjoy as much time or space.

With the cushion of the two goal lead Poole were content to manage the game and possession but still carried threat down the flanks but fortunately for the Rams, into the wind ,their previously dead eyed shooting was less accurate and Bowman was largely untroubled.

When your lucks out it really is out! Having enjoyed some rare good fortune a week ago against Tiverton, Meakin and his team could have been forgiven for thinking that particular corner may have been turned. May be not it seems. Meakin introduced Callum Webb but 13 minutes later Webb himself had to leave the field after a clash of heads in the Poole box saw him sustain a serious split to his lower lip which meant he was unable to continue.

Despite fate reducing them to 10 men The Rams continued to press. They were able to apply pressure and create a number of set piece opportunities but never really troubled Hutchings unduly until the 80th minute.

Stepping in to intercept a Poole break Louis Stead released James Ewington who was clear on goal. Hutching’s came to meet him outside the area and the striker skipped past him but was delayed enough for a defender to cover round and stand between him and the goal.

Ewington advanced on goal and a protracted bout of cat and mouse ensued as he waited for the retreating defender to commit himself before eventually slotting the ball home from about two yards.

It’s the hope that kills you. Just as Ewington’s effort fanned the embers of a possible comeback the home side took less than a minute to stamp them out.

Joshua Carmichael meandered across field and played in Luke Pardoe who was allowed to advance on goal with defenders backing off, before picking his spot and placing the ball firmly past Bowman into the corner.

The home side were well worth their win and Beaconsfield must regroup and hope that Nathan Webb recovers quickly to provide the snap and aggression that was missing from the midfield in the first half here.

This report makes no mention of the Referee Mr Underhay at all. Fair to say he did not go unnoticed. His flamboyant and loud Brian Glover [The PE teacher from Kes] meets Mike Deane, ‘look at me I’m refereeing’ approach, fortunately didn’t prevent both teams from producing an entertaining spectacle played in a good spirit despite difficult conditions.

Next up The Rams entertain Hendon at Holloways Park on Saturday.
