Rams Pay the Penalty

BEACONSFIELD TOWN 2         WOODLEY UNITED 2

            Woodley win 3-4 on penalties

For the second time this season Beaconsfield exited a cup competition on penalties. The first time it was to higher division Slough Town in the League Cup. This time it was to lower division Woodley United who deservedly progressed to the next round of the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup.

Both sides found it hard to get anything constructive going in the first half hour though the visitors were certainly enjoying more of the play. On 37 minutes they were awarded a penalty after Rams keeper Jamie Norris was (harshly) adjudged to have fouled Jaydyn Engelfield. He picked himself up and slotted the resulting kick home. Indeed, Woodley may well have gone in two goals to the good at half time but Toby Briggs 41st minute effort was well saved by Norris.

The second period was barely twenty seconds old when Elliot Carey set up Jordan Ajanlekoko but the normally reliable AJ blazed over from six yards. A Wes Daly shot was then well saved by Alex Reed on 52 minutes though The Rams did get an equalizer sixty seconds later when Michael Peacock headed home from a corner.

The parity lasted barely a minute as Woodley went straight down the other end and Toby Briggs saw a deflected effort loop over Norris to put the visitors back in front. The Rams then finally had a decent period of play as efforts by Daly, Aaron Minhas, Luke Neville and AJ all went close. An equalizer did come on 82 minutes when Kofi Lockhart-Adams spun his marker to slot home, a goal desperately needed for the Rams striker. Kofi then nearly set up a winner as his persistence on in the ninetieth minute saw him set up AJ though once again his touch deserted him and Reed was able to save.

And so to penalties. Scott Cousins went first for The Rams and converted with ease. Jake White then saw his effort saved by Norris. Callum Mapley put The Rams two pens up, Ashley Ledger pulled one back for the visitors before Charlie Kuehn saw Reed make a fine stop. Joe Barley leveled the proceedings before Kofi then struck an awful penalty that was easily dealt with by Reed. Jaydyn Engelfield put Woodley ahead with his second penalty of the night and though Wes Daly converted his kick it was Liam Watson who slotted home the decisive pen and put Woodley through.

In truth Woodley seemed to want this game more than their hosts - it was the first time they had beaten a team from Step 4 – and there can be no denying they deserved to go through. For The Rams, the home form woes continue.
