Rams Man of the Match - Myles Bowman

When you are beaten 4-0 at home and your best player is your goalkeeper, it’s been a tough day at the office. So it was for Beaconsfield Town at Holloways Park on Saturday afternoon.

Myles Bowman in the home goal produced a string of excellent saves to keep a rampant Wimborne Town attack, spearheaded by Tony-James Lee, at bay. One second half save in particular, flying high to his right to claw a dipping Lee effort out of the top corner, was out of the top drawer.

The mauling did not seem on the cards at the start of the afternoon. The Rams, boosted by two cup successes in a week, started with confidence in a quiet opening quarter of an hour and on another day would have been one up after eight minutes. A half-cleared corner fell to Dean Morgan who crashed in an acrobatic volley which fizzed toward goal straight at James McCluskey alone on the edge of the six-yard box. His instinctive prod somehow gained enough height to crash back off the bar and away to safety.

That was it for the Rams for the first half. Morgan was withdrawn moments later limping off with an injury and Matty Holmes switched to three at the back. Suddenly Wimborne had all the possession and seemed to have a man over.

Sam Nayston had a goal ruled out for offside after a Tony-James Lee shot ricocheted to him.

Bowman made saves from Sam Bayston and Luke Burbidge who also delivered a low shot on the turn which grazed the post. The visitors forced a succession of corners and it was one-way traffic.

Thus it came as no surprise when the visitors went ahead. Sam Bayston fed Lee who delivered a calm finish across Bowman and into the corner. Beaconsfield tried to rally and but were unable to create anything beyond speculative efforts from distance as Wimborne continued to carry the real threat.

It was still no surprise when the visitors extended their lead on 27 minutes with Lee rising high at the far post to head in a perfectly delivered corner from six yards.

Again the home team tried to respond and gain a foothold but even though they enjoyed some possession they were living on scraps most of the time as the visitors reacted quicker to 50/50’s and even when they were able to penetrate, usually on the flanks, the crosses lacked penetration or the clearance fell to a Wimborne shirt. From early on it had the feel of one of those days.

 

Half time 0-2

 

Luke Neville was withdrawn at half time and Shawnikki Clement-Peter joined Tyrell Mitford up front and the second half started brightly for The Rams. It was one of those, “Next goal is important” afternoons.

The visitors got proceedings underway, Luke Burbidge drew a routine straightforward save from Bowman and then Tony-James Lee had the keeper tumbling to his right to turn a low effort round the post.

The best chance came at the other end when Clement-Peter combined with Mayo Balogun  and made his way to the by-line before picking out Bajram Pashaj, 8 yards out with the goal at his mercy - you expected the net to burst but the winger chose to place his effort which dribbled harm - essly wide. If the air wasn’t out of The Rams balloon before that, it definitely deflated after.

Gary Meakin introduced Brendan Matthew who added pace and threat but The Rams were struggling to enjoy any quality possession against a well drilled and disciplined Wimborne side who managed the game and possession effectively and were capable of breaking at speed and with menace. Beaconsfield were made to look lightweight across the park and but for Bowman the score would have been even more lopsided. He though could do nothing about Stefan Penny’s well taken penalty, awarded for a Mayo Balogun pull back on Burbidge, or Burbidge’s cross shot in the 85th minute which capped a fine afternoon in support of Lee.

Beaconsfield can have no complaints as on the day they were beaten by much the better team.
