Rams rue missed opportunities

Harrow Borough 2 - Beaconsfield Town 1

Rams Man of the match - Omar Vassell

Rams left to rue missed opportunities as Boro snatch late winner

Beaconsfield were punished for a failure to take their chances at a rain lashed Earlsmead Stadium, conceding a controversial 86th minute winner against Harrow Borough.

The game started well for the visitors as both sides tried to establish their styles on the rain sodden surface.

On six minutes Beaconsfield took the lead. Jordan Ajanlekoko played a slide rule pass inside the left back for Marvin Morgan who beat Jordan Ireland and lifted his shot past the on rushing Hafed Al-Droubi. 1-0 Rams.

The lead lasted seven minutes until a hopeful long hoof from the back caused confusion and a spot of after you Claude between retreating Reece Yorke and on rushing Ravan Constable which allowed the bustling Dylan Kearney to poke a foot between the two and lift the ball into the empty net.1-1

The goal was the first serious effort for the home side. Beaconsfield were in the ascendance and Boro invited the visitors pressure by maintaining a suicidally high back line. Only poor execution and a couple of highly questionable off-side decisions by the assistant prevented The Rams from carving out more opportunities.

In the second half Beaconsfield again started the stronger and with the introduction of Bajram Pashaj for Marvin Morgan they enjoyed sustained pressure forcing several corners but little by way of quality chances. The persistent rain was now taking a toll on the surface and the run of the ball was not always predictable in the worst affected areas.

The pitch played a part on 68 minutes. Omar Vassell appeared to have over run the ball near the by-line but the surface held it up allowing the full back to play a lovely pull back with AJ and Brendan Matthew onside and unmarked in the middle. You’d have put your mortgage on Ajanlekoko to fire the Rams ahead as he took aim from six yards with Al-Droubi flailing but the surface intervened and the ball slowed on the wet turf and the big midfielder offered only an air shot as he tried to readjust to the path of the ball.

Two minutes later Pashaj skipped past his defender and delivered a cross with his unfavoured right foot which found Brendan Matthew Eight yards out at the near post Brendan met the ball on the full and it flew narrowly wide of the post.

It was all Rams at this point and moments later Ajanlekoko again had the chance to put the Rams ahead and this time it was all his own work. Receiving the ball on the right he forced his way into the area between two defenders, side stepped the diving Al-Droubi and placed his shot the wrong side of the post and into the side netting.

You suspected that these misses may come back to haunt Beaconsfield and as the conditions, the pitch and Saturdays exertions started to take their toll the home side were finishing the stronger and as time ticked down started to threaten with more menace, prompted by the excellent Michael Bryan at the heart of the midfield.

Skipper Ryan Moss saw a 20 yard dipping volley crash back off Constable’s bar and moments later the combative Kearney forced in a right wing corner winning a robust challenge with Constable. Referee Mr Hurst could reasonably have penalised the challenge on Constable and there was a strong suspicion of handball about the finish.

An unsatisfactory end to proceedings but in truth The Rams had only themselves to blame. They could and should have been out of sight by the time Kearney nicked the points.
