Rams Take Point From Favourites
WEYMOUTH 1 BEACONSFIELD TOWN 1
Rams Man Of The Match: BRENDAN MATTHEW
The Rams returned from the long trip to Weymouth with a hard fought and much deserved point though it could so nearly have been all three.
Weymouth are clear favourites for the South Premier South title. They have a wonderful old style stadium, an organized determined committee and a large loyal following. The great facilities are boosted by a quality squad with a sprinkling of ex-pros so for The Rams to come away with a point whilst missing four regular first teamers is no mean achievement.
The lively Brendan Matthew sent a header over for the visitors on six minutes whilst Josh McQuoid went close for the home side five minutes later. Weymouth’s Jake Carmichael sent a shot just wide on 23 minutes whilst Charlie Losasso’s 41st minute free kick wasn’t far from finding the target. Weymouth, in particular winger Abdulai Baggie, enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half but rarely troubled Ravan Constable in The Rams goal.
Three minutes into the second half Beaconsfield took the lead. Losasso’s defence splitting pass fell to Matthew who controlled and then calmly slotted past Jordan Seabright in The Terras goal. They nearly had a second on 51 minutes when Omar Vassell’s shot was saved by Seabright and on 56 minutes Reece Yorke when should have hit the target when a Vassell cross found him unmarked.
Weymouth upped their tempo and Ben Thomson in particular saw a couple of decent half chances go begging. Constable then made excellent stops to thwart last season’s leading Southern League scorer Brandon Goodship whilst The Rams back four stood strong to repel the regular flow of attacks. Beaconsfield responded when sub Tre Mitford sent an effort across the face of the Weymouth goal as The Rams played mainly on the counter.
On 88 minutes, however, Ref Sam Littlerfair played an advantage following a foul by Dan Brown and McQuoid seized on the lose ball to send in a cross that Josh Wakefield was able to slot home from two yards.
Though the home crowd sensed a late winner it was The Rams who came closest to snatching victory as deep into added time Mitford ran onto a through ball but seemed to be caught in two minds and the golden opportunity went begging.
The Rams have made a decent start to life in the Premier South Division. Taking points from two of the title favourites in the first three games is a fine achievement, particularly when not able to name a full strength side. There is a great spirit running throughout the whole squad, a lot of laughter and togetherness. That and their undoubted talent as a team will ensure the victories will soon start coming.
Come On You Rams!
