Rams unable to convert first half chances as Truro top

Southern Premier League South

Beaconsfield Town 0 v 1 Truro City

Rams Man of the Match - Jordan Ajanlekoko

Beaconsfield went toe to toe with one of the leading contenders for the Southern Premier League South title on Saturday in Truro City who had keeper James Hamon to thank for gaining the three points.

As the City faithful headed for the exits and their 7 hour journey back to Cornwall most took the view that they were happy that they had seen their team win when not playing well. If you had based this view on the final twenty minutes it would maybe seem fair as the title chasers failed to make their second half pressure tell. However for the first hour and particularly in the first half the visitors played as well as The Rams let them.

There was no way based on the first half performance that there could possibly be 20 places between the teams. On another day they could have found themselves two down before taking a somewhat fortuitous lead in the 31st minute.

The visitors had their keeper to thank for maintaining parity as the home side played some of the best attacking football we’ve seen at Holloways Park.  With Radio Cornwalls reporter confidently predicting,

“Once City get one you feel they will go on to win comfortably,” ?

Charlie Losasso curled a free kick dipping over the wall which James Hamon somehow managed to claw out of the top corner and over the bar.

Moments later after a fast and incisive passing move the returning Kezie Ibe played in the ever-industrious Jon-Jo Bates in space on the edge of the area. With the visitors defence cut open Bates steadied himself and sent in a low drive from eighteen yards which had Hamon plunging low to his left to turn away.

The best chance of the half seemed to have fallen to Losasso as he found himself in space twelve yards out but on the stretch he lost his standing leg at the key moment and his strike lacked the power to trouble a relieved Hamon.

Unsurprisingly having failed to make their pressure tell the home side fell behind in the 31st minute but the manner of the goal enraged the home defence.

Niall Thompson, lively all afternoon, forced his way into the penalty area challenged by Luke Neville. Thompson went down in a dramatic heap looking for a penalty he was never getting. He then rolled forward from his fall and over the ball appearing to handle it in the process. Home defenders committed the sin of not playing to the whistle as they stopped momentarilly expecting a freekick. Thompson regained his balance and played the ball back into the path of Alex Battle who steered a first-time effort into the top corner past the despairing dive of Myles Bowman in the home goal.

Stung by the perceived injustice The Rams sprang back on the attack but failed to hit the heights of the first half an hour with Hamon dealing with straightforward efforts.

Half Time 0-1

Beaconsfield carried nothing approaching the same threat in the second half. They were non existant as an attacking force. Reduced to a snapshot from Louis Stead which flew just over and a shot on the turn from Tony Mendy acrobatically blocked by Edward Palmer at either end of the second period.

In between the visitors dominated with Will Dean, Tyler Harvey, Rio Garside and goal scorer Battle prominent if not fluent in attack. The Rams defended resolutely as they have all season and on the rare occasions they did weaken Bowman was equal to the test, making smart saves from Dean and his best, flashing to his right to turn away a Jamie Richards effort. In truth though he was never called upon for the sort of heroics his opposite number performed in the first half.

Signs of improvement will only get you so far and at some point fairly soon The Rams must start to turn pressure into goals and points. There was enough in Saturday’s performance to suggest that if they keep going as they are their luck must change soon.
