REDDITCH UNITED 3 BEACONSFIELD SYCOB 1
SYCOB headed up the M40 on Monday for the long trip to Redditch United, tired but still on a high after their hard earned three points gained at the expense of Rugby Town the previous Saturday. This Quarter Final fixture was always going to be a tough affair against a Calor Premier side who sit nicely in mid table and have a record of only one defeat at home all season. Add to that that their scheduled league fixture the previous Saturday fell foul to the weather and they were all rested and prepared for this first ever clash between the two clubs.
Straight from the kick off you could sense that Beaconsfield seemed slightly jaded and it was Redditch that applied the early pressure creating one or two good half chances. Slowly SYCOB began to ease their way in to the game and come to terms with the heavy pitch and on 14 minutes nearly opened the scoring when, after some good inter change play between Nathan Webb and Ryan Phillips, Ryan burst into the Redditch box to execute a beautiful dipping lob over the keeper only to see his effort bounce off the crossbar. A few minutes later and this time some good play between Tom O'Regan and Phillips (who was causing the Redditch right back some hairy moments) saw Ryan drag his shot wide of goal when put through.
Beaconsfield were playing some very neat football and looked the more likely to be the team to open the scoring but on 17 minutes, after the ball had been given away cheaply in midfield, Redditch broke quickly down the other end and played a slick pass into the path of the lively Harvey Headley who slotted the ball calmly under the body of the advancing James Reading totally against the run of play.
SYCOB then seemed to lose a bit of shape and came under some strong pressure and it wasn't long before Redditch doubled their lead after a poorly taken free kick was easily cut out by a Redditch midfielder who played the ball out wide with the resulting cross being put into his own net by the unfortunate Tom McGarry. Things got worse on 44 minutes - with no-one closing down the advancing Ashley Sammons he tried a speculative shot from outside the Beaconsfield box which took a vicious bounce just in front of the diving Reading and ended up in the net. What had started quite well for Beaconsfield ended with a 3-0 half time deficit.
Some changes were made for the second half with Tom O'Regan being replaced by Brian Haule and Jon-Jo bates replacing Zak Joseph and this seemed to give the side some new impetus as they started to create some good chances early on and were denied by some good goalkeeping and strong defending as SYCOB went for the goal that might give them some hope of getting back into the game.
They finally broke through on 76 minutes when Brian Haule bundled the ball in from close range. This certainly acted as a pick me up as Beaconsfield had a couple of chances to double their tally as Aaron Morgan had a good opportunity well saved by Bradley Catow in the Redditch goal. Shaun Owens then replaced McGarry and with SYCOB well marshalled by Man Of The Match Nathan Webb, Redditch were now themselves under some constant pressure, having to dig deep to keep the score at 3-1 with some anxious goal line clearances and last ditch defending.
Try as they did SYCOB couldn't find that elusive second goal which would have set up a lively finish. They should feel mighty pleased with themselves with their second half performance and but for some silly mistakes could well have caused another upset as they finally bowed out of the Red Insure Cup in the furthest stage the club has ever gone.
