The RAMS Women brought pride back to Holloways Park on Tuesday night, led by Hannah Hester, the RAMS battled to a 3-2 victory against a high-class team from Woking.
In a game which for once was played in warm & dry conditions, both teams fought hard for the win and Lucy Casey's brave header in the 60th minute proved to be decider. A ball into the box bounced high and with the Woking defenders fast advancing to clear the ball away, Casey nipped in to nod the ball over the head of the keeper into the empty net.
The game started well for the RAMS with a close-range strike from Casey in the 7th minute, receiving a cross from Ruby Harris and wrong-footing the keeper to score. In the 14th minute the RAMS were awarded a free kick 35 yards from goal and despite the distance, Charlotte Hill’s powerful shot beat the keeper for a 2-0 lead.
As always can happen the RAMS defence took their foot off the accelerator and trying to play out from the back were caught out by the Woking press and conceded a well taken goal by Keenan in the 20th minute. This was followed by Woking being awarded a penalty 10 minutes later, after a foul in the box, which was converted past Lisa Phillips to bring the score back to 2-2.
HT 2-2
The RAMS were unfortunate to have lost the lead but after a half time chat with manager, Brian Harris and his team, they came out for the second half with a fighting spirit and from the kick off they showed their resolve not to concede. Lisa Phillips showed her class in defending her goal and with support from her defence repelled every effort Woking could throw at them.
The introduction of Georgia Price for Shauna Smith on 46 minutes & Pippa Lance for Chloe Kaur on 55 minutes, brought fresh stamina into midfield and despite several close efforts from the Woking attack, it was the RAMS who retook the lead after 60 minutes through Casey.
Woking fought hard to score again but the effort from both sides started to show understandable signs of tiredness for both sides, and several players went down injured which resulted in a further 12 minutes of injury time before the RAMS secured their first trophy after only 2 years in existence.
