SYCOB BOW OUT OF LEAGUE CUP

POTTERS BAR TOWN 4 BEACONSFIELD TOWN FC 2

Beaconsfield bowed out of this seasons Red Insure Cup as their very young side - with only three players from the starting line up against Rushden the previous Saturday - put up a spirited fight against an experienced and organised Potters Bar.

The Scholars started well and the lively Jerry Maja tested Brendan Hazlett on four minutes whilst three minutes later the solid Ashley Harrison-Barker had a good run through the Beaconsfield midfield only to shoot over.

The Beaconsfield, err, "massive" (Club President Dave Piercy, Taff, Steve the accountant and The Captain) thought they had taken the lead on nine minutes when a long range Jack Read shot was fumbled by Connor Sanson and looked like it had gone in but had actually spun into the side netting!

The home side took the lead on 22 minutes when Maja controlled a pass, flicked the ball up and hit a volley that whizzed past Hazlett. A great goal.

Beaconsfield responded immediately when good play by Jack McKnight set up the busy Read who fired home past Sanson just sixty seconds after Potters Bar had taken the lead.

The rest of the half saw both teams trade periods of possession with Tope Fowudu having two excellent opportunities to score, in the 39th and 43rd minutes, but he failed to beat Sanson on both occasions.

The second half saw Sanson make a good save from a McKnight free kick on 54 minutes whilst the home sides Garry Jones went very close with a shot three minutes later. However, on 58 minutes, Maja took advantage of an off side decision not given to place the ball past Hazlett. A minute later Beaconsfield made a real hash of clearing their lines and gifted Potters Bar a third goal which was turned into his own net by (the outstanding) Lee Togwell.

To Beaconsfield's credit they didn't crumble and on 63 minutes after some neat build up play between Jordan Ford and Nathan Minhas, Aaron Berry blasted home a spilt ball by Sanson to set up a tense last 25. McKinght had a couple of semi decent efforts whilst Potters Bar always looked dangerous going forward.

It was left to a bit of a farcical goal to finish the evenings scoring. On 85 minutes The Rams were again struggling to clear their lines and when someone finally put their foot through it the ball hit Evandro Delgado's backside and bounced past a wrong footed Hazlett. Not going to win any Goal Of The Month competition but enough to win the tie for Potters Bar.

It was always going to be tough for The Rams with so many changes but the majority of the youngsters acquitted themselves well. With better finishing they might even have had a different result and the First Team experience will stand them in good stead for the future.
