TIVERTON TOWN 6 BEACONSFIELD TOWN 1
RAMS MAN OF THE MATCH: Jon-Jo Bates
It’s a long way from Beaconsfield to Tiverton. It seems even longer when someone with a warped sense of humour in the league fixtures department sends you down there on a Bank Holiday Saturday. It really seems a long way, however, when you make that journey only to get hammered 6-1 and then know you have to travel all the way back.
Such was the situation that The Rams found themselves in in a mad first half that saw them go from 0-0 on twenty minutes to five nil down just twenty minutes later.
The home side, probably benefitting from not having to spend four hours on a coach, started brightly and on two minutes Olaf Koszela saw his effort saved by Rams No.1 Andy McCorkell. Ten minutes later the lively Chris Shepherd watched his effort go narrowly wide whilst on the quarter hour mark Jordan Bastin somehow managed to miss the target when a goal looked certain.
The breakthrough came on 21 minutes when Noah Smerdon was given too much space and sent a curling effort from the edge of the box into The Rams net. Five minutes later a Tivvy corner gave Jared Lewington a free header and he gleefully took full advantage to put his side two up. Two became three on 31 minutes when Shepherd danced through The Rams defence to slot past McCorkell.
The busy Jon-Jo Bates broke through the home rearguard on 33 minutes but his effort to bring The Rams back into the game was thwarted by a good save from home custodian Lewis Williams. What could have been 3-1 soon turned into 4-0 as Koszela headed home and that became five on 40 minutes when Luke Neville was harshly judged to have brought down Lewington, Tivvy Captain River Allen giving McCorkell no chance from the penalty spot.
The goal fest swung Rams way on the stroke of half-time as a Baj Pashaj free-kick was headed home by Dean Morgan, his first competitive goal in a Beaconsfield shirt.
Such a hectic pace was never going to continue for a second 45 minutes though any hopes The Rams had for a damage limitation exercise were dashed on 55 minutes when a dreadful mix up in defence let in Smerdon to slot home goal number six for Tiverton.
The Rams, Bates and Mayowa Balogun in particular, did keep going though there was little to trouble home keeper Williams apart from a last minute strike by Jon-Jo that he comfortably dealt with.
With games coming thick and fast this needs to be filed under ‘bad (long) day at the office’. Time to pick ourselves and go again.
Come On You Rams!
