Beaconsfield Towns Under 18's had their FA Youth Cup dream snatched away from them in the closing moments of a pulsating cup tie on Monday.
Both teams deserve credit for providing the bumper crowd at Holloways park with such an entertaining and high-quality encounter despite the Halloween Horror show torrential weather.
Both teams gave it everything battling each other to a near standstill with the elements reaching near monsoon conditions at times.
The game was a cup classic!
In the end it was National League Maidstone United who prevailed 3-2 but they had to come from behind twice on the night before taking the lead for the first time in the tie with a cool freekick on 85 minutes.
The Rams who had early goals in each half pegged back by the visitors almost staged their own last-gasp comeback but a flying save followed by a ' could have gone anywhere ', goal-line clearance that ultimately denied them the extra time that was probably the least their performance on the night deserved and saw Maidstone through to a Second Round Tie at Colchester United.
Cup runs like political careers mostly end in failure. So it was always going to be a sad end but it was a truly terrific cup run.
The boys and staff can be justifiably proud of their efforts in the competition which has brought great credit to them and the club as a whole and earned them a little place in Beaconsfield Town History.
On the night and what a night they came up against a strong well organised outfit but pushed them every inch of the way.
Here's hoping The Young Rams will come back stronger for the experience.
Well Done Boys! We're extremely proud of you.
